Chapter 13: The First Day

“Theo, wake up,” Milo said as he shook him.

“What,” Theo mumbled, rubbing his eyes as he sat up.

“Hurry up,” Milo said. “The dragons are doing a headcount.”

“Alright, alright, I’m—” Theo started as he stood.

“Hey!” Fury yelled, sticking his head into the shack. “Hurry up.”

“Coming, Fury,” Milo said. They hurried out of the shack.

“Follow me!” Fury yelled. Milo hurried after him, Theo close behind.

“Good,” Fury said, looking into the crowd of people. “You’re all here. Now line up.” When they were lined up, he added, “Today will be your first day working for us. All of you will have a different job for the day. Any questions?”

“When do we eat?” Andinne asked.

“Snohp told me that she would give you that soon. But first, you need to work before you get anything.”

“What are our jobs?” Andinne asked.

“There are four different jobs for today,” Fury said. “The options you have are as follows: grooming the other dragons and me, helping Snohp make food, whatever that is, cleaning the light, and searching dwellings for suspicious belongings.”

“What are ‘suspicious belongings’?” Theo asked.

“Anything,” Fury said.

“But why—” Theo started.

“No more questions!” Fury screeched. He clawed the ground furiously. “This area is certain death/grooming, this one here is helping Snohp, over here is scrubbing, and over here is the search team,” he said as he motioned to every area. “Now choose a job.”

Theo walked over to the area for scrubbing. Milo and Annie ran to the area for helping Snohp and Andinne went to certain death.

“You’re a brave one, huh?” Fury said to Andinne. “This area is certain death, human.”

“Sounds cool,” Andinne said, beaming at him. “I’ll try it.”

“Good, good,” Fury said, rubbing his claws together. “Oh, Snohp. You’re here.”

A tiny green dragon slithered toward Fury. “Hello,” she said. She narrowed her eyes at each of her group members. Milo shivered. Her eyes were unsettlingly piercing.

“Snohp, these are your helpers,” Fury said. He motioned toward Milo and Annie’s group.

“Come with me,” Snohp hissed, waving a talon at her group. She slithered past Fury and into a wooden shack. Milo and the others quickly followed.

“Certain death, stay here,” Fury said to Andinne, giving her an unsettling smile. She ignored him. “Search team and the scrubbing team, go to the light. Rertyoi will give you your instructions.”

Theo, the scrubbers, and the search team all left. Inside the wood shack, Snohp was on a table, yelling at her helpers.

“SO THEN YOU NEED TO MIX THE GRUBS WITH THE—” Snohp started, holding a mixing bowl and mixing bugs with her claws. Everyone was in a line in front of a small, long table that had multiple bowls with bugs in them.

“Snohp,” Milo interrupted. She kept going.

“THEN, YOU SHOULD PUT THEM—”

“SNOHP,” Milo yelled, plugging his ears. Snohp fell silent. “Can you stop yelling?” Milo asked.

“WHY?” Snohp yelled. She shoved her talons into the bowl, making a squelch sound.

“Because you can talk normally,” Milo said. “Like this.”

“BUT YOU CANNOT HEAR ME IF I TALK NORMALLY,” Snohp hollered, cupping her claws around her mouth and screaming at full volume.
